In the past, games were played in solitary on the PC or eventually, consoles like the Nintendo or Playstation. In today’s world, however, the number of people you are capable of playing with is no longer limited to the number of controllers you have. With the expansion of the internet, some of the best games in the world can be played with millions of other users.

Unfortunately, many of the games out there are crap. I’ve played so many games that were unexciting and failed to captivate my interest that I’ve almost given up on the whole MMO genre. Luckily, however, I was eventually able to weed through the poor games and come up with what I believe to be the best free MMORPG list.

The free online MMORPG games are rated in order of quality and I highly recommend you try them out in the order I recommend. As always, gaming preferences are variable, so you may have to try all of them to find one you really like.

There’s little doubt in my mind that this game is worthy of being on the top free MMORPG list, and in my opinion, deserves the title of number one. As I wrote in this article:

This game deserves to be on the list for a variety of reasons:

Unique
This game is much more unique than most free online MMORPG games, and is different than any other game I have ever played. This is a big deal to me, because I have played so many different free online MMORPG games, and I constantly find some of the more generic games blending together. Fortunately, this game does not have that problem, and definitely earns its spot on my free MMORPG list.
Easy to Learn, Hard to Master
The game isn’t so difficult it takes forever just to figure out how to play, but you will have to invest quite a bit of time if you ever hope to master it. In my opinion, this is how free online MMORPG games should be.
Friendly User Interface
I hate games with terrible user interfaces that make it impossible to control your character. The user interface is pretty good in this game and definitely won’t leave you frustrated.

Graphics

I have found it hard to find any free online MMORPG out there that has graphics comparable to this game. As far as graphics go, this game really is the best.

Great to Play With Others
This game is awesome to play with others due to the synergistic aspects of the different classes. The strengths of each class balances out the weaknesses of other classes, and you can really have some fun when you work together. Additionally, the PvP is pretty sweet too.

Big User Database
Huge amount of users playing this game (guess I’m not the only one who loves it?) which is way better than some games that have like 10 users total.

Cool Items
Really cool item system in this game, way better than the generic “+10 Attack Damage” items you see in some boring games. The items actually are unique and add a lot to the strategy of the game.

Lag
Lag sucks. This game doesn’t lag. Need I say more?

Non-Repetitive Quests
This is so important it’s not even funny. How many games out there that every single quests consists of “Kill 10 monsters” or “Kill another 30 monsters”. This game actually has unique quests that don’t get boring.

As you can see, this game is pretty sweet, and is definitely worth checking out.

This game is actually similar in quite a bit of ways to my first rated choice (I think they might be owned by the same company?) but does have a few major differences. Rather than relist all the qualities I mentioned above, let me just highlight some of the main differences between the two games:

Graphics
This is by far the most obvious difference. Many people will choose which they like between the two solely based off of how different the graphics are. Which one you like better is really up to personal preference in this case.

Leveling Up
I’ve noticed you do tend to level up more quickly in this game. If you wish to slightly decrease the amount of questing and possibly grinding (fortunately neither game requires much grinding, especially compared to similar games like World of Warcraft), this game has a slight edge compared to the other games on my free MMORPG list.

Unlike the other two games mentioned, this one is entirely different. This game is essentially a real-time strategy based game more similar to Starcraft or Age of Empires rather than traditional MMO’s like World of Warcraft.
Because the game is so different, it is definitely a worthy candidate for my free MMORPG list and clearly worth checking out. Some of the reasons I love it are:

Unique
This game is pretty unique as games go, which is one of the main reasons I added it to my free MMORPG list. In truth I guess it may not be entirely unique to you if you have ever played the games Civilization or Caesar, but since those games are old and obscure and I’ve never personally met anyone else other than myself who has played those games, I’m assuming this game will be a very new style to you, which is always refreshing.

Time-Efficient… Sorta
One of the unique aspects of the game is the time system. Instead of having to sit in front of the computer in order to control your characters, you can assign them tasks and then leave for many hours (or potentially even days) and they will continue to complete the tasks and improve your city even while you are gone. This can be pretty cool, considering you can play for five minutes, study or work for an hour or so, then check back in and reassign tasks to your people.  This is obviously different than the other free online MMORPG games on my free MMORPG list because in the other games, nothing can be accomplished unless you are physically present.

User Database
The user database for this game is HUGE. One of the biggest I have ever seen. This makes the game pretty interesting because you can not only trade with other humans, you can attack them or join guilds with them.  The team element of this game is unique and very exciting, definitely contributing to its spot as one of the best free online MMORPG games out there,

Conclusion
Overall, while there are many free online MMORPG games out there, I consider this free MMORPG list to be composed of the best. While some may appeal to you more than others, I recommend trying them all out for yourself until you find one that is as captivating as possible.
